- Artist Statement:
- The content of a painting or drawing is inseparable from the craft of making it; meaning is lodged in the guts of the marks left behind by the implements of art-making. Representation in painting and drawing is not primarily concerned with fidelity to the titular subject, but rather, with fidelity to the artwork, which is the end-product of a dialogue between subject, material, artist, and picture plane.
- Biography:
- My current main body of work focuses on still life subjects which anthrophomorphize human interactions; by substituting objects for figures, it is hoped that the paintings will present the viewer with numerous opportunities for interpretation, and therefore, a sincere and open invitation to engage more directly with the work.
Ms. Fox studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and at the Parsons School of Design, but received the preponderance of her training from several academic ateliers, including that of Andy Reiss in Brooklyn, and many others associated with the Art Students League in New York City, where she received Board of Control and Merit Scholarships. Her work is also informed by her studies in the Growth and Structure of Cities at Bryn Mawr College. In 2004, she received the prestigious Phyllis Mason grant, has been a finalist in the American Society of Portrait Artists (ASOPA) annual competition, and has exhibited at and received awards from the Salmagundi Club and the Pen and Brush Club in New York City, as well as participating in numerous group shows. A native and life long New Yorker, she is thrilled to be in North Adams and have the opportunity to have a decent studio and get some work done, already.
