Biography:

This pioneering group, founded by international performing and teaching artists Lara Gonzalez and Yael Shacham, presents an artistic expression that fuses original songs and spoken word with traditional West African rhythm and dance - showcasing indigenous instruments. Their infectious energy, genuine warmth, and rock-solid musical talent place them in demand for group shows of every genre from World (Fula Flute) to Jazz (Perry Robinson) to Folk (Odetta) to Rock (Hammel on Trial). Marafanyi is known for diverse creativity - " Percussion is just the beginning!" - as well as their commitment to the therapeutic, educational and transformative power of drum, dance and song for all ages, populations. The ladies travel frequently to Guinea to focus on the dynamic and lyrical music & dance from a variety of ethnic groups and maintain assistance programs for artists in the capital region there.

As teaching artists, the ladies of Marafanyi Percussion have over 10 years of experience serving all ages and populations. They have a holistic approach to West African Drum, Dance and Song that is fun, encouraging and accessible. With the focus on joyful exploration students connect mind, body & spirit through a powerful & lyrical vocabulary of rhythm & dance. Their work promotes wellness, empowerment, creativity, and also highlights cultural diversity, tolerance and the community spirit.

Marafanyi recently supported Congolese guitarist Dominic Kanza and his African Rhythm Machine at MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) and Grammy Award winner, Angélique Kidjo from Benin at SOPAC (South Orange Performing Arts Center). In addition, Lara and Yael are resident teaching artists at NBCA (Northern Berkshire Creative Arts) and NJPAC (New Jersey Performing Arts Center).
